With architectural plans drawn up, all survey data in place and planning successfully passed, a developer’s next consideration should always be site engineering.

Whether that involves the setting out of piles, drainage, access roads or, further down the line, your steel frame, brickwork or concrete slabs it is absolutely essential that you make sure you have competent, reliable and professional site engineering support on your project from day one.

The UK’s leading land surveying firm, The XRAIL Group possesses the added dimension of a comprehensive site engineering service covering everything from setting out with the very latest in robotic total station technology to providing machine control services for use with Trimble’s SiteVision and GCS900 laser dozer systems.

From prestigious tower blocks and landmark sports stadiums in London, major water pipelines and industrial / retail estates in the North West to railway stations, platforms, tracks and OLE bases throughout the UK, our specialist teams of site engineers have extensive experience performing topographical, precise measurement and building dimensional surveys together with their specialist construction site engineering services.

The XRAIL Group can also deliver site engineering either in isolation or in conjunction with railway technical services or utility mapping with many of our clients finding our ability to combine these different services to be extremely valuable.

We are geared up to take on projects of all sizes with just a handful of recent site engineering projects including…

  • Providing the principal supervising site engineer for the entire Cambridge Station redevelopment for Morgan Sindall / Colas Rail Joint Venture
  • Providing the principal site engineer for the highly successful Sandhills twin bridge deck replacement project for Birse Rail recently featured in The Rail Engineer magazine (Issue 88)
  • Providing the principal site engineer for the redevelopment of Warrington Bank Quay Station for AMCO
  • Providing the principal site engineer for the development of Gazeley’s new G-Park development in Liverpool
  • Providing the principal site engineer for a brand new retail park in Stockport for Volker Fitzpatrick

All personnel come to site equipped with the very latest in Trimble S6, S8 or SPS930 robotic total stations, their own Trimble R8 GPS receiver, a field notebook with all relevant software packages with a whole fleet of grade lasers, pipe lasers and radar systems ready to back them up at short notice. As a result you can guarantee that our site engineers are always ready to hit the ground running.

Setting out and levelling

The XRAIL Groups’ policy on setting out is that all setting out engineers must have a minimum of five years’ on site experience with ten or more years being mandatory for senior personnel. It is also mandatory for all our site engineers to have extensive experience as professional land surveyors.

We believe wholeheartedly that a first class setting out engineer should have an excellent working knowledge of land surveying for a number of reasons…

  • The principles of both fields are inextricably linked and whilst good land surveyors do not necessarily make good setting out engineers it certainly does help.
  • Our personnel are then far more flexible being easy to place successfully on either a setting out or a land surveying project.
  • This flexibility gives our client a far more rounded, adaptable site engineer who can apply himself to a wide variety of other tasks during any down time. The last thing our clients want is to employ an engineer for just a few hours of work a day. Our setting out engineers are multi-skilled and more than happy to help where help is needed.

All The XRAIL Group’s setting out engineers are CSCS and PTS/Sentinel Card holders and come with a full complement of equipment ranging from Trimble S6, S8 and SPS930 robotic construction total stations to Leica levels, grade lasers and Trimble R8 GPS receivers. By using the very latest robotic equipment a one man survey approach can be adopted saving time, eliminating errors due to poor communication and keeping rates very competitive for our clients. Design information can then be readily uploaded onto the instrument and set out in real time.

The majority of our setting out is based around the civil and rail sectors where millimetre and sub-millimetre accuracy is far more relevant than on the average housing scheme. That said, we have a number of large house builders and housing association clients to whom we regularly provide setting out services whilst providing many principle engineers for the construction of high schools, academies and colleges, recreational parks, landmark sports stadia, prestigious London tower blocks, water ways, footpaths, reservoirs and numerous other schemes.

Whether you need a setting out engineer for an hour, a day, a month or even a year… Whatever your project The XRAIL Group can supply you with highly experienced, professional engineers to ensure your development proceeds without a hitch.

Machine control

Using the latest Trimble ATS/GCS900 technology and the SiteVision 3D Dozer System, The XRAIL Group regularly provide machine control services to the Rail, Civil, Land Fill and Utilities industries.

This system places GPS, laser or total station technology inside the cab to accurately position the bucket when creating surfaces, grades or alignments.

Machine control can be used for all manner of applications from grade control over long-linear projects like railways and highways to bulk earth moving in precise quantities from specific locations.
